Zone Six is comprised of 35 coastal communities on the Great Northern
Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador. Nordic Economic Development
Corporation is the lead economic development agency in the area which
was created in 1996. Since its creation there have been many challenges
that have been overcome, despite struggling fishery and forestry
industries and population declines.
These challenges have brought with it numerous changes to the economic
environment. Positive changes that have brought about technological
advances that was unimaginable ten years ago. These changes have
brought with it opportunities on a national and global level that has
enabled community leaders to “think outside the box.”
The availability of high speed internet service has put the business
community on an equal competitive level with the various options of
online marketing in areas such as tourism. The turn toward this new way
of thinking has created the atmosphere for innovative new ideas for
existing industries that will lead to the diversification of the
economy, which in turn will help to create a more sustainable economic
future.
A new Strategic Economic Plan developed in April 2011 is based on
identified sectors of the economy. The four areas that have the greatest
potential to encourage economic growth are as follows:
Fishery
Natural
Resources
Tourism
Business
